OCP’s Past Community Green Events

The Decatur Really Really Free Market! April 27th, 2008, 1 – 5 p.m.

The Really Really Free Market is like a community-wide potluck for what folks don’t need or would like to share. It’s an outdoor, multi-participant “yard sale” of goods and services where everything is free and freely given.

By sharing resources, recycling our goods, and keeping stuff OUT of the LANDFILL, the RRFM helps us make a positive impact on the lives of the community at large.

Please bring anything, from baby clothes to haircuts, that you would like to share. Any potentially USEFUL item no MATTER its value is welcome (as long as it’s legal!)Then hang out and see what others would like to share with you! Please remember that all goods not taken by the end of the event MUST be removed!

All participants will be entered in a drawing for a rainbarrel or a Home Eco-lution Kit: Eco-friendly solutions and supplies for your home!

The Live Lightly Tour!

The OCP Curriculum and Green Committees are excited to introduce you to the Janssen family, who have been traveling the country since September in their veggie oil powered RV. Before embarking on the Live Lightly Tour, Matt, Sara, and their three-year-old daughter Bella sold their mid-sized house and downsized to a 382 square foot apartment. The Janssens love living a small, sustainable lifestyle and enjoy teaching others how to do it for themselves.

Come out and meet this incredible family and tour their environmentally-friendly RV, equipped with bamboo floors, sunflower seed countertops and solar power. Please feel free to contact us for further information.

So what does a green preschool look like?
Just like Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool!

We are one of the few preschools emphasizing environmental education in its curriculum. While many private and public kindergarten classes are 
beginning to introduce environmental awareness into their curriculum, few start earlier; preschoolers are not commonly thought of as an easy age group to start teaching the
importance of taking care of their planet.

But we do just that, by introducing environmental education to young children in a way that engages them, intrigues them, and creates an empathy and respect for all living things and their habitats. We hope to provide even our youngest children not only with a gentle awareness of their impact on the world around them, but also an understanding of how they can make a positive difference.
